George W. Appleby is a partner in Carney & Appleby, P.L.C. He has been practicing law in Des Moines and throughout Iowa since 1979.
George has a very broad legal practice, focusing in recent years on personal injury, administrative and regulatory law, professional licensing problems, federal and state criminal matters, and insurance and corporate defense. He was an assistant Polk County Attorney for three years following law school and then an assistant city attorney for the City of Des Moines for four years. His local government experience included trial work, government and regulatory law and criminal prosecution. He has argued numerous times before the Iowa Supreme Court and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
In addition to his general practice, George has been lobbying the Iowa Legislature and Executive branches since 1990. A major, but not exclusive, focus of his lobbying efforts has been health care issues. George has been a member of the Governor’s Medical Assistance Advisory Council (MAAC) since 1991 and served as its chair in 2000-2001.
George was a member of the Polk County Compensation Board from 1990-2003 and served as its chairman in 2001. He was also a member of the first two Polk County Charter Commissions. He is emeritus Master of the Bench of the Blackstone Inn of Court and has been awarded a “very high legal ability and ethical standards” rating by Martindale-Hubbell peer review. George is also a member of the Iowa State and American Bar Associations and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Representative clients include the State of Iowa, DaimlerChrysler Financial, Western Heritage Insurance Co. (a Nationwide company), and Magellan Behavioral Care, Inc.
